Our Bedrooms Before and After

Ok…I finally organized enough to take some after pictures of our rooms.  I didn’t think you’d get the full idea with the moving boxes and piles of stuff everywhere in our rooms.  Anyways…Here are the before and after pictures of our rooms @ my parent’s lake house. (Where we are lucky enough to be living until we sell our house in Danube and buy a new house of of our own)

Here’s Tanner’s room BEFORE:

For Tanner’s room I used Dutch boy Refresh 0 VOC paint, stick on decals and stick on stripe from Menard’s.  The black out curtain panels, comforter and sheets I bought at Wal-Mart. The basket’s and road rug I got at IKEA kids section.  Total spent on his room= LESS THAN $150.

For our room I used: Dutch boy Refresh 0 VOC paint and Wall writing from Menards. King size Comforter/sheets and window panels from Wal-Mart.  Lamps and Paul’s night stand(left side of bed in the pic) from Ikea.  **Note:  I should have gotten two but wasn’t sure if we would like it but it is a PERFECT night stand/small dresser.**  Closet panels and throw pillows I already owned.  Total spent on our room= LESS THAN $200

Also I would like people to know that I normally wouldn’t really care if I had a TV in our room but after learning with Tanner, it is a necessity for me when I am up nursing/feeding in the middle of the night.  It’s when I catch up on all my trashy TV.  I know you are all jealous of my super modern TV.  I think I got it when I moved to my first apt in college so it is SUPER high tech :)

Going out tonight

Hey all, just writing because I am going out tonight!!!  WHAT?!?!  Weird I know….This dang winter and pregnancy has kept me down and out long enough..Time for a night out with my LOVELY sister Sadie :)  No kids, no curfew, just us and the big city (yep..heading to my old stompin’ grounds in Minneapolis)  Of course, since I am nearly 7 months pregnant it won’t be a “throwback” Heidi wild time BUT I am looking forward to grabbing some late night appetizers, some virgin cocktails and enjoying the company of my sister and friends.  Also, a big THANK YOU THANK YOU to my husband and mom who encouraged me to take the time to myself and go do something fun.  It’s hard to remember to do that sometimes in the crazy world of Mommyhood.  Happy FRIDAY!!!  Hope you are doing something fun too!!

Oh yah..almost forgot..to top off my fun time I am hitting up a MAJOR garage sale tomorrow @ St Francis Elementary.  Time to get some baby clothes for Deuce…I have had the sudden realization that if this baby comes out and happens to be a girl, I really don’t have anything.  SO I am going to spend a few bucks on some garage sale clothes and if I don’t use them I have 4 girlfriends who are due after me and ALL having girls :)  And although I do have boy clothes that I used with Tanner, there’s nothing from stopping me from picking some cute summer stuff if Deuce is a little man :)  I just love baby clothes!!  I am in the mood to SHOP!!!

Have a good weekend!!

Meal Planning

I know some of you have expressed interest in meal planning and grocery shopping lists.  I do this religiously every time I go grocery shopping.  I make a meal plan, make a list, then stick to the list (pretty strictly I might add).  It really helps take the stress out of trying to figure out what is for lunch and dinner because I have so many great options to choose from and KNOW I have all the ingredients on hand to make them.  It also saves my family money because I don’t make those impulse buys at the grocery store too often.  (YES-grocery stores are MARKETING MAGNETS!!!  I watched a whole show on the process of setting up a grocery store to get consumers to spend the most amount of money.)  I thought I would walk you all through my meal planning, grocery shopping prep so that maybe it can help you start meal planning or perhaps tweak the process you already have.  (PS..I am always looking for time/money saving tips for grocery shopping/meal planning so if you have some good info-PLEASE SHARE!!)

Step 1-RAID YOUR PANTRY

See what supplies you already have and maybe find some inspiration from your ingredients

Step 2-Check out local ads and coupons

Maybe you can use an on sale item to offer inspiration or ideas for your meals..PLUS save some $$.

Step 3-Write up your meal plan

I used to do my meal plan day by day but realized that my pregnancy whims and cravings had me switching days around so now I just write up a list of dinner’s and a list of lunches or lunch food.  It also makes it easy because I do NOT cook full blown meals EVERY SINGLE DAY.  Some days I just do the quick lunches or dinner ideas OR  If I make a big dinner the night before I will usually have a day of leftovers.   The goal is NOT to micro manage what we eat every single day, rather just take the stress out of wondering what is for dinner…even if that dinner happens to be grilled ham and cheese, steamed veggies, and fruit…which from time to time does happen and is TOTALLY acceptable.  Here is an example of the meal list I made for this week.

DINNER OPTIONS

Meal 1

Taco Hotdish (Casserole for those NON Minnesotans), Fresh lettuce salad and Sugar free jello w/fresh strawberries

Meal 2

Chicken Stir Fry w homemade Fried Rice

Meal 3

Turkey burgers, sweet potato fries and watermelon

Meal 4

Corndog Casserole (this is a new recipe I found and decided to try because of Tanner’s LOVE of hotdogs..I’ll let you know how it goes), steamed veggies, and pineapple

Meal  5

Grilled BBQ Chicken, grilled potatoes and asparagus, pasta salad

Meal 6

Homemade chicken noodle soup and homemade bread

LUNCH OPTIONS

Meal 1

Turkey and Swiss wraps and cottage cheese w/fruit

Meal 2

English Muffin Pizzas

Meal 3

Homemade Mac n Cheese w/veggies

Meal 4

Chicken nuggets, steamed broccoli and yogurt

Meal 5

Breakfast for lunch-(Blueberry Pancakes and turkey bacon)

Like I said before..this is just a list of options.  I don’t stick to it like it is LAW.  Sometimes if I am feeling lazy I will even go SUPER crazy and have a lunch options for dinner or vice versa…CRAZY I know.

STEP 4-Make a Shopping list

Based on your meal plan and what ingredients you already have in stock, make a grocery list.  I like to make categories on a sheet of paper: Produce, Frozen, Meat, Dairy, Canned, and Other.  I write these categories down over the sheet then go through meal by meal and write down the ingredients I will need in the right category.  It makes it easier to grocery shop rather than having a laundry list of random items sprawled over the page.  It also can help gage how much $$ you will be spending on your trip to the market-lots of meat equals a higher bill.  However, if you stock up when there are sales and coupons on the higher priced items you can really save LOTS!!

After you have all the meal ingredients written on you list go through and write any incidentals, snacks or breakfast food you may need/want.  For example: I needed brown sugar, breakfast cereal, vegetable oil,  olive oil and fresh fruit for snacks this week so I added it to the list.  Paul is a chip FIEND so he requested sour cream and onion chips as well as frozen pizzas.  Writing down even these seemingly SIMPLE things will save you $$.  Put it on your list then ONLY get what is on your list.

Step 5-Enjoy your STRESS FREE approach to making dinner

I know this sounds SUPER detailed and OCD but it seriously takes me 15-30 minutes from start to finish.  PLUS it makes my grocery shopping and dinner prep STRESS FREE!!!  I  just go to my list and poof –Dinner is done for the night.   I only started planning lunches because the dinner menu was working out so great and I found myself wondering what to make Tanner and myself for lunch everyday with out doing the SAME OLD THING.  It would also be helpful for working moms/dads who want to save money and pack their lunches daily.

Did I mention it saves $$$ too?? Oh I did…Well-  With the exception of milk, eggs and bread runs in between..this amount of groceries and these meals can feed me and my family for about 2-2.5 weeks (3 if I am feeling extra sassy).  But there are only six dinners you say?!?!- remember…I don’t do BIG meals every night, there are leftovers, I use lunch stuff for dinner sometimes, AND there are days when we are running or busy when that grilled cheese and veggies is the dinner of choice.  From time to time I also enjoy the challenge of “throwing” together a meal from what I have laying around.  It makes me feel resourceful.

Today’s GRAND total I spent on groceries was: $163.54 (including stocking up on meat and olive oil…2 big $$ items)

(Like I said I won’t need to do another BIG trip for about 2.5 weeks)

Pretty good huh???

Hope you find this helpful!!!  Remember: I am always looking for tips too so if you have a secret meal planning/grocery shopping tip PLEASE SHARE!!  Also, none of these recipes are SUPER fancy on my meal plan BUT if you want more details on any of the meals just let me know and I can shoot you an e-mail.

Happy Meal Planning!!!

Stubborn Old Man

Old Man Winter that is…. I know I live in the GREAT state of Minnesota and I am one of the crazies who actually enjoys winter-the snow, the cold, staying cozy on those cold winter days- BUT even I am getting a little fed up with the cold GRIP Old Man Winter has on us this year.  It's APRIL!!!!!  Time for song birds, grass and dare I dream for 50 degree days????  Maybe it is the fact that I am feeling a little under the weather, or maybe that I have moved to the lake and would MUCH rather look out at the open water rather than vast sheet of white nothingness BUT I am ready ready ready for spring!!!  I also have some home decor projects that require some spray painting (LOVE LOVE LOVE spray paint).  25 degree days just don’t cut it.  I saw the weather report for the rest of this week and am not too hopeful for my 50 degrees but there is always next week right???  Here’s to hoping we pop right from winter into SUMMER!!  I can’t wait!!!

2/3rds done Cooking

I am officially entering my 3rd trimester!!  WOOOO-HOOOOO!!   June is coming quicker than I could have imagined.  Still feeling great and loving being pregnant.  “Deuce” is EXTREMELY active in here and feels much more jumpy/hyper than Tanner ever was.  Heartbeat is still in the 140’s and everything is on track for a June baby :)  We couldn’t be more excited!!  Bring on the homestretch!!

12 Month Stats

Yesterday Tanner had his 12 month checkup and vaccinations.  He was a really well behave little boy until the nurse started with the shot business.  Then you would have thought that someone was cutting off his pinky by the way he screamed.  Poor Boy :(  Then he had to continue to milk it and fake cry, pushing out a pathetic attempt at real crying, every time anyone looked at him and gave him sympathy.  It was actually quite funny at that point.  He’s such a little ham.  Anyways, here are his height and weight stats:

Height: 30 inches 55%

Weight: 23lbs 7 oz 58%

Head circ: 19inches 92%

He’s also learned sooooo much in the past couple months.  It seems like everyday he is doing something new and surprising us.  Here are some of 1 year old “tricks”:

High Fives

Dancing (to ANY music he hears)-video of that coming soon

Kisses

CLIMBING ON ANYTHING/EVERYTHING!!

Laughing when we laugh (even though he has no clue why we are laughing)

Noises he can make: Truck (pushes his cars and rumbles his lips), cow, kitty, roaring for tigers/lions

Words he can say (or at least mimic): Bye-Bye, Bath , Mama, Dada, Num-nums (eating), cup, Nana, Night-night

Standing unassisted but still too timid to take steps on his own (which is funny because he has absolutely no fear when it comes to climbing up onto things or crawling off beds, couches etc)

Throwing mini tantrums when he doesn’t get his way (laying down and crying)

Fake Crying

Using a spoon to pick up food (getting it to his mouth is a different story)

I can’t wait to see what he does today!!

Birthday Party Picture Overload

Last Sunday we had Tanner’s birthday party @ Maple Grove Community Center.  They have an indoor playground and a really nice indoor pool.   Tanner had a blast and was a VERY tired boy by the time it was all over.  Thank you, thank you , thank you to everyone who came and celebrated with our 1 year old!!  I apologize that these pics aren’t posted sooner.  Monday I had a birthday party hangover and then we have been busy moving to the lake!!  (As soon as I organize…I promise to take pictures of our bedroom re-dos)  For now, enjoy the pics of Tanner’s party.
